A Beginner's Guide to Race BMX in New Zealand

So you want to get into race BMX in New Zealand? You've made a great choice — BMX racing is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, with tracks in nearly every major city and a thriving community of riders of all ages.

What is Race BMX?

Race BMX is an Olympic sport where riders sprint around a purpose-built dirt track featuring jumps, berms, and rhythm sections. Races are short (typically 30–45 seconds) but incredibly intense. Kids as young as 4 can compete, and there are categories all the way through to Masters (40+).

Finding a BMX Club in New Zealand

BMX NZ (the national governing body) lists affiliated clubs across the country, from Auckland and Hamilton to Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. Most clubs welcome riders of all skill levels and hold regular race nights throughout the season (typically October to March).

What Gear Do You Need?

To get started in race BMX, you'll need:

  • A race BMX frame or complete bike — sized to your age and height (Mini, Junior, Expert, Pro sizes are common)
  • A certified helmet — full-face is recommended for racing
  • Gloves and long sleeves/pants — most clubs require covered arms and legs
  • Flat-soled shoes

At Trackstars BMX, we stock race frames in every size from Mini to Pro XXXL, along with all the parts and safety gear you need to get on track. Not sure what size frame suits your rider? Contact us — we're happy to help.
